Background checks are as deep as the company or agency choose to pay for. A $150 background check by my company will have your college degree verified, your past employment verified, your personal and professional references verified and a criminal background check.

A $750 background check will have your college degree verified along with every grade you made. Your past employment will be verified only as deeply as the law allows, but our investigators are cagey about asking questions in such as way as to get exactly the information they want. Your personal references will delve far more deeply and they may go and interview your neighbors, your past landlords and even childhood friends. We will provide a detailed credit check that spans as far back as we can locate credit details and a criminal background check will detect every ticket, every traffic stop, every accident, etc. We are able to get information from your homeowner's insurance records and because we make prospective employees sign a release, we are even permitted to get detailed medical records.

The pity is that no personal information is sacred anymore and stupid kid stuff can truly follow you around for the rest of your life. The best thing you can do is to be honest with your prospective employer, tell the truth and demonstrate that you have been walking the straight and narrow for however long. Offer to work for a longer probationary period and then if you're lucky enough to get the job, be an exemplary employee.

Just because we find things in people's pasts, they are not necessarily exempt from employment. Failure to report those things always will. It is never a good idea to pad a resume in this day and age and fess up to the stupid things in your life. I personally agree that a person's past should be kept in the past when they have grown beyond it, but with technology the way it is... Big Brother is watching...

Background checks are as deep as the needs of the person or agency doing the checking. Traffic violations are not necessarily noted after they have been adjudicated. Some agencies may ask if you have ever been arrested and, in yur case, you have. The cases were dismissed, but there may still be a record of them, depending on the state. if you are not applying for a job in law enforcement or security, these will not be important. If, however you are applying for a position in law enforcement and you do not report the srrests with an explanation, it will affect your application.
