It really depends on how big you were before you got pregnant. I am overweight and was advised to not gain more than 20 lbs. My cousin is very thin and she was told she should gain 25-35 lbs. You lose about 15 lbs as soon as the baby is born, the rest will typically come off over the next few months, especially if you are planning to breast feed. I only gained 13 lbs with my first and 15 with my second. Your doctor should tell you if you are not gaining enough, or gaining too much. They watch this because gaining too quickly or not at all can mean there are other problems.

Good luck, you are probably doing just fine. And don't fret it, you are supposed to be enjoying this time...so go eat some ice cream.

EDIT: Oh, as much as you are comfortable with, the same as you are used to carrying. You can keep doing any exercise that you have been doing before you got pregnant unless your doctor says otherwise. Usually at about 30-35 weeks they will put a weight restriction of 10 or 20 lbs on you.

I'm 15 weeks with #2. My doctor told me this time to take it a little easy so I now don't pick up my daughter as much as I used to (she's almost 3) and I have my husband carry the laundry down stairs for me. If I question if something is too heavy I don't lift it. You should be able to do whatever you used to do (within reason).

The ideal weight to gain during preganancy is 25-30 pounds.

My Dr has always said no more than 10 pounds. Every time he tells me that...I tell him to say that to my 30 pound son.

If you can help it (meaning someone else can carry it, or you're just being stubborn) than try to stick to the 10 pound rule. If it's a child, and no one else is around to help....well you can do it but seriously try to avoid it at all costs.

My doctor's advice was not to do more than I did before pregnancy, for me that meant lifting up to 40lbs. Good Luck :)

anything that you would have to strain to lift is too much. (",)
