I read somewhere that it was considered to be unclean to be left handed cause people would wipe their butts with that hand. Im being totally serious about this! My mom was actually forced to change by getting smacked on the hand with a ruler by a nun when she used her left hand.

shrdlu is correct, anyone who was left handed was supposed to be 'evil' with connections to the devil or children of the devil. I did not know the Latin was sinistral. These misguided thoughts have only recently been re-evaluated. My father was left handed and victimised when he was at school. My son is left handed, he too had trouble from a rather elderly teacher when at primary school. I had to intervene. It is so sad when people are picked on for being 'different' - a rather modern example.

They were thought to be children of the devil. The Latin word for "left-handed" is "sinistral".
That's where the word sinister comes from.
Many left-handers only 50-60 years ago wrote backward because they wrote from the right side of the page to the left.
At that time some baby spoons were built with a bar coming off the handle to make it awkward for a baby to hold it in there left hand.
Many parents and teachers taught children to use their right hand even if they were left-handed. This made them very uncoordinated.
If a left-hander invented reading we would read right to left (like Arabic and some other languages). And would read a book from back to front because they hold the book in their right hand and thumb through it with their left.

they thought that by being lefthnded they were abnormal, satanic, human beens, at least that what they thought in some countries. little did they know that lefthanded people can work with both sides of their brains at the same time. and are meant to be superior than right handed people, at least historically.

People are afraid of what they don't understand. I have 2 sons that are right handed but left footed - now I think that is odd, yet it seems to work for them as they are both leading goal scorers!

this is the same thing my friend complains about. but i dont think they are victomized. for example only some religions do this because of a certain reason. like your not supposed to eat with your left hand in india because its like illmannered. but there is always a reason behind something(which i dont know). but then when you look at china its different..people do eat with left hands SOMETIMES. i think when you think people are against left handed you start thinking EVERYONE is victomizing left handeds.

People are generally afraid of what they do not know or understand, or what goes against the norm. Since the majority of people were right-handed, people believed that those different than themselves were cursed, bad luck, or somehow inferior.

Hope that helps.
