The problem is caused by good hearted people who like looking after lost souls. Of course people will latch onto that, they are filled with gratitude that someone is helping them and simply don't want to let go! Such people are generally lonely and don't want to lose their new found 'friend'. The way to deal with this is starting how you mean to go on ... be polite but firm and point out that you cannot really carry on helping them and they either need to now support themselves ( best practice ) or seek help from people that are there to give it. You are obviously a very caring person and yes, people can take advantage! As we all know .... there is nothing worse than someone wants to be your friend solely when they need something!

Kindness sets up expectations! That's one difficult thing about practising kindness, as far as the limited capacity kind people are concerned! There are some recollections, yes: at this stage, that past is gone, it might be unkind to recall! Some kindness shown to me should never result in expectations for more, just the grateful feelings should be the only link with the other kind soul helping me, is the lesson in the above Q ! And, thanq for that!

Yes. My husband is a firefighter and we helped this one family after they lost everything in a fire, they had no insurance. We didn't have much, but we helped with what we could. It got to the point where they "expected" us to show up every week to give them something and they never said thank you either. Then we found out they set the fire themselves. About a year later the husband got put in jail for child molestation. But as soon as we found out they intentionally burned their own house down we severed all communication with them. And not soon enough it seemed.

I met a girl with OCD & Terrettes syndrome that had been on a documentry on TV when i was working and thought i would say hello... She then would not leave me alone... I was selling Icecreams at a caravan show... So it's all elderly people and young kids and she was stood at my van and shouting and swearing! She couldn't help it obviously but it's not what you want when you are serving the public!!
I had 3 days of it... But luckily that's all it was.

Absolutely! It is not easy to separate yourself from someone when this happens. I would just not make myself very available and they will eventually get the message.
