Because the dates on the timeline need to start from 470 BC then jump to 1766... but wouldn't the gap in years look weird? How would I fix this?

A truly well drawn timeline has equal spacing between the years or decades. In your case you would be going up in centuries. If the gap looks too large for you why not break the line somewhere along the gap like this
1000____ _____1500____ ___1700
