A single subject is highly unlikely to prevent you from getting a job. It depends a lot on what the subject is. If it is Music Appreciation, it's hard to see how tha knowkedge would be valuable in getting a job.

In any event, the energy lost would be the energy expended in passing the course.

The energy spent in a wrong direction is always waisted. If the person is really sincere and learns a subject in depth, he/she will always be able to use the knowledge to earn the livelihood. Passing one subject does not mean that you have earned all the knowledge that is essential for earning livelihood.

As regards gain from study of that subject I will make a comment ' knowledge builds up your character and personality. Which helps in paving a way to success.
