That's my main question, but i also would like to know what the other sections in the trenches did, such as the support and reserve trenches and the communication trenches did.

The frontline trenches had usually 3 machine gunpost left-center-right which had interlocking fields of fire. These trenches were also manned by riflemen. They duties at time were to go out on patrols at night to probe the enemies lines for weaknesses-- these patrols alot of times consisted of nothing more than listening. The land between the front lines was called No mans land usually devoid of cover and filled with craters from motar and artillery fire. The Conditions were pathetic--cold-wet--rat and lice infested---muddy and water standing in them which contributed to Trench Foot and other miseries. These trenches had Command post bunkers and 1st aid stations dug into them. The interlocking trenches which ran at right and left angles away from the from is where the Communication lines ran to the rear also the Artillery Emplacements--reserve troops--bigger 1st aid stations and so forth were installed there.

The frontline was simply the point of contact between the two opposing sides, be they French, British, German, Austrian etc.

The main trenches were attached to all these different trenches, the secondary lines. Communication trenches ran between combat, front line, trenches and the rear command lines. They carried messages to and fro between the units. Support trenches often held artillery, or units in positions to held defend front-line trenches, and were oftne slightly behind the first combat lines.
Reserve trenches connected the front line to its rear-guard unts, allowing reservist units to rapidly approach the front line and engage the enemy.

This any help to you?
