i have a fractured patella. on the xray, it looks fairly straight and does not appear to go entirely through the bone. currently i am wearing a soft leg brace and using crutches. i don't have much pain, but a little discomfort when sitting at a desk for a long period of time. above the knee area is swollen. tomorrow i go to an ortho for an eval. i don't want to have surgery if i can avoid it...do you think this will be possible? thank you!

good news & bad news... 1st good news, since the kneecap is not fractured completely and you do not have much pain you should be just fine in a few weeks by taking it easy... but you must try to keep your weight off of the affected leg as much as possible to keep from swelling up all over again... also elevation of leg while sleeping will work its magic.
2nd bad news, if you continue to put stress on leg [kneecap] inflamation of fracture will take longer to heal and flare ups of discomfort could multiply leading to a long recovery... picture having to start rehab allover again from scratch... get the idea?
