Oh, constantly. Education is always a matter of "dumbing things down". Learning things is an iterative process, with things you learn today building upon each other to support new things you learn tomorrow. Take the progression of addition->multiplication->logarithms->calculus for mathematics. Each is required to understand the next in line.

People who teach are generally many, many steps beyond those who they are teaching. Their understanding of a topic often includes numerous things that aren't in their pupil's repertoire, and their pupil's understanding usually requires finding things that are equivalent but simpler.

There is "good" dumbing down and "bad" dumbing down, but that's a matter of accurate targeting. Bad dumbing down involves giving examples that are either way below a person's ability to understand (suggesting that they're stupid), or above their ability to understand (again, suggesting they're stupid). It's always a challenge to do appropriate dumbing down.

note: I'm a teacher by inclination, not by profession.

Quite often. I am usually accused of using "50-cent words" - meaning that I have an expanded vocabulary that most people never take the time to develop and therefore feel inferior when I use a term they are not familiar with. It sucks cause sometimes I get mad and just give up rather than try to "dumb" my conversation down for people.

I wouldn't call it dumbing things down. Everyone learn and understand differently. Some may not catch on as quickly as others and depending on where you are from words or sayings have different meanings.

Not often more like sometimes and yes I agree that it can get very annoying when what you've explained has been explained in layman's terms but the people or person still don't seem to understand.
Still you have to be nice otherwise people will think you're full of yourself.

No, I answer with the equivalent of a dissertation. After that most people understand or are totally baffled, like myself sometimes.
