Dallas and Miami are the two exceptions to the geographic realignment of the NFL in 2002, done to preserve well-established rivalries.
It's correctly called the NFC East.

All the teams in the old NFL east (excluding the Arizona Cardinals) are powerful, rich teams. When the NFL went about this latest realignment, they (Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, and New York) insisted on being in the same league, regardless of geography.
Maybe you are right about the naming of the leagues. but instead of naming them division 1, let's get creative. Name the divisions after a past NFL great. And rotate the name every year.
The NFC East could be the "Landry Division". The following year it could be the "Theismann Division".

alright, when the cowboys joined the NFL back in 1960, as an expansion team, they wanted to be in the best division in the NFL, the nfc east. they stayed there because of the established rivalery between them and the redskins ( the redskins were the only team blocking dallas' entrance into the NFL, so dallas bought the rights to the redskin fight song and held it ransom until washington changed there mind. also keep in mind, it wasnt until recently that there where only three divisions in each conference. it wasnt until after houston joined that they added the north and south.
and it would be insane to realign the conferences. rivaleries have already been developed and theres no need to do it. as it is, the rivaleries have become weaker because of salary cap, trades, and free agency. sure teams dislike their rivals, but there is a like of genuine hate between players, as players will move teams a couple time throughout their career. its rare nowadays for one player to stay in one place, so its hard to develop a hatred. not to mention one year you can be playin for one team, and the next be playin for their rival. ie TO in philly then TO in dallas

yeah well I wouldnt call Kansas City a "western" team, but Dallas like KC is in the middle, so they can go in any division except the north.
