My Dell Inspiron B120 has been struggling lately in a lot of ways. However, starting up has been especially bad. Lately, the compute takes 10-15 minutes with the black screen and Windows logo (sorry for my non-use of computer jargon) while trying to load.

Any idea why or how I can fix it?

Follow these steps to do computer maintenance.

- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.

Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.

Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com

Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

Try to reduce the number of startup programs. Go to RUN and type MSCONFIG. Pick the STARTUP section and try disabling many of the programs and processes that you see. But KEEP your Antivirus solution running, and test that after you reboot.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Sounds liek it may have a virus, easiest and quickest way is to reformate your pc or have someone that knows what they are doing do it. This will basicially make your laptop like new, your will ahve to restall program and does involve wiping your hard drive backup all your documents and enythign you want to keep. The restall windows, most dell have a recovery partition which will do it for your i think you have to tap F11 as the laptop is booting up ( it should say on the screen somewhere or in the instruction manual you got with your pc ).
Or Dell may have give you a disk with windows on, if you don't know what your doing get it do professional as you could end up losing all your documents or not being able to use your laptop as you have deleted the partition and windows is no longer there.

Well this has to be the best explanation: First you have to remove all the applications that are loading during start up. 1. Open up the run command from the start button, and then type in: msconfig under start up, unselect all the applications, and then hit apply and then restart. 2. Second you have to uninstall any application that you use the least and the ones you don't need. 3. Third you have to download a software called Ccleaner (also called Crap Cleaner because it cleans junk), and after installed run a scan after you check every option on both windows and applications tab, and it will removed any un-necessary files. 4. Go to the Registry tab located on the left under Cleaner, and scan for issues, and then when done make sure you click fix selected issues, accept the backup and save it, and then your computer will be a lot faster. Please PM me if you want more help or information.

Once it finally DOES start, go to Start --> Run --> and type in MSCONFIG. click on the Startup tab and look through there for crap that really doesn't need to load every time you startup. For example Quicktime or the MS office tools, Messenger programs, etc. Do internet searches on items to make sure you're not taking out something that's required (Like explorer, which isn't Internet Explorer, but a different, required function of windoze. You can speed startup a great deal by taking unnecessary stuff out of startup.

Possibly too many programs loading when you start windows

Start>Run>type in MSCONFIG>Startup tab - uncheck any program you don't want to run when you start Windows

you could try a disc clean up and defragment, this usually speeds things up a good bit
