This includes movie stars, sports figures or anyone else that is in the limelight and watched or celebrated for what they do.
You mention that there are too many of them. I think that we just hear way too much about them. With all of the gossip and celebrity magazines (which I abhor) even a TV station devoted to them and their lives, we are bombarded with them and all of their wonderfulness or lack there of.
In my mind the sad thing is that celebrity is confused with someone being a hero. A celerity and hero are not always the same thing.

A celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention.
A celebrity could be an actor, filmaker, artist, athlete, etc.

1. their fame..
2. their looks..
3. their popularity..

There would be no celebrities without fans. People idolize others who are exceptionally talented or rich.
