You did not say where water was coming out of the engine > If your car has overheated lately then I would say you have a cracked head or a blown head gasket. This would allow water to enter one or more combustion chambers and exit the engine from the side between the block and the head. Check the water level and remove the oil dipstick and check for (oil in the water) or (water in the oil) . This is a tell-tell sign of the above problem. A 97 Cavalier with 200,000 miles is not worth reparing as you are looking at about $1000.00 in cost at a repair shop.Junk it let it go back or whatever and buy you another with the money you would spend on repairs

Water is coming out of the engine? or the exhaust pipe? There are alot of criteria that you have not listed. Check the starter, or the cylinoid. You could also have a bad water pump or a cracked manifold. If you have water in the Engine compartment itself, thats REALLY BAD. and with 200,000 miles on it you are better off just getting a new car, and sending the old beast to the graveyard. If the water is coming out of the exhaust then that is just usually the catalytic converter.

When you say it won't crank, do you mean it won't turn over t all, or it turns over but won't start. If it turns over but won't start. Then look to the electronic ignition system. If it doesn't turn over with the key at all then look to the battery connection and the starter solenoid. As for the water. that's not good. Call a friend that knows a little about cars. It needs to go to the hospital.

When you turn the key, does it make any noises? The starter could be bad.

Where is the water coming out of? Has the engine been in water? Or is it coming out of a hose? You may have a major coolant leak.

Those cars *may* have some kind of safety feature that prevents it from running if its coolant level is below some X level.

Are you sure it is water? Contact your local full service center and they may tell you, it may cost more to fix it than it is worth. I would think about buying a new or used car. Water, good. Water in engine, not so good! How much did you pay for the car? If you are in a situation where you can not afford a different car, I would see what they say and weight the pros's and con's. Ask them what "Blue Book" value is on your car. You are looking at $700.00 to $400.00 in value for your car, I used a Conservative estimate.

If you have got water coming out of the engine, then it is the head gasket. If you know what you are doing, then the job is not particularly hard to solve - or particularly expensive.

You need to find a friend who knows about these things - or buy a good book.

A '97 Chevvy is worth doing some work on......

Good luck.

as an automotive technician for over 15 years it sounds like you have done what we call vapor locked the motor. it most likely has a head gasket problem or a crack in a head. the first is most likely. wter has gotten in to the cylinders and has created a presure build up and wont let the motor crank. sounds like you need a technician to do some work on it. have it towed to a shop somewhere.

It sounds like your head gasket is bad.If it has been bad for a while your antifreeze has gotten in your engine and ruined your internal engine parts.Your best bet is to just replace the whole engine that is if the rest of the car is in decent shape.Good luck!

Sounds like your car's block cracked... in other words the engine is shot and is leaking antifreeze out of the block itself. At the age and mileage I really don't think the repair costs are justified. Junk it and start looking for a different car. Sorry for the bad news!!

the water could be comming out of the water pump if it's broken and if you hear clicking when you try to start your car it could be the starter but befor you go replacing and part you should really look into geting a nother car with less miles
