on a clock face with roman numerals why is the bottom half of the clocks numbers upside down? i.e. all the v's and should'nt
four be 1v instead of four single 1's (funny in it)

Just imagine yourself sitting on the clock hands, as the hands rotate and gets to IV,V,VI,VII,VIII, IX You should be able to read it right side up, correct?

At one time some clocks were made so that the hour hand (pointing upward) was stationary and the actual face turned. Thus the numerals would be right side up when they reached the hand. Guess the practice just held even when the hands moved and not the face.
As for IIII instead of IV, I can't help you with that one.

The numbers on the bottom are not upside down if you are viewing them from the center of the clock.

As for the IIII -- here is a link that attempts to explain it. While the explanation that the Romans actually used IIII and not IV -- I like the response that it is done so as not to confuse the ignorant.
