We just bought a new, unfinished, poplar porch swing. It will be on our porch, so not directly exposed to weather. Does it have to be finished, like with varnish or stain that includes the varnish, or sealant? It does need to be slightly sanded, but the previous swing had minwax stain with varnish on it and it didn't seem to do that much for it and over time wore off from sitting in it. I just wasn't going to waste the time on finish for it, if it wasn't necessary.

Bare wood will draw moisture. I would advise using a sealer on it. At this time, you can decide if you want a color or just sealer. I like to use Polyurethane. Minwax makes Polyshades that reduce work by having a color and sealer in one operation. Good luck.

It's not necessary to finish it, but it will last longer if you do. Personally, I like the look of weathered wood and I absolutely don't like the look of wood that has been finished and the finish is partly worn off. Poplar is a good hard wood, so if you like the look of weathered wood, you've made a good choice.
