First question(s) you need answers for are : 1), are you using a prefab shower enclosure, and if so, 2) how big is your doorway into the bathroom? Many older houses have smaller doorways, and do NOT permit larger showers to be installed. New homes have a prefab shower unit, but sometimes it's put in BEFORE the walls are installed, so you can't get the same size in without removing the entire door(way) and a partial wall to get a replacement in ( and the old one OUT ). If it's a unit type. A modular type will probably fit since you'll be putting in individual pieces. So, before you go further, you need to know if you're going single-shower prefab unit, or modular pieces, and if the former, how BIG your bathroom doorway is, so you can fit it thru. BIG beginner mistake to not check this measurement out before buying!
So, the minimum needed is basically what will fit thru the doorway easily ( 31" by XX if there's room for larger length ).

32 inches by 32 inches is a normal size. I bought a 30 by 30 once but it cost a lot more.

Go look at the dimensions of shower liners. It is absurd to waste time (trust me on this) trying to make a liner yourself or to make one fit that doesn't match construction dimensions. If you are going to tile, use the same dimensions. Check out the shower pans that collect the water and direct it to the drain. Go stand in one at Home Depot, Lowes, or a decorating place and measure what you like.

3 feet by 4 feet (36" x 48") should be compact yet comfortable. You can do smaller, but you won't like it.
