...as in, "lack of awareness of the environmental consequences of their consumption habits"?

I thought "oblivion" would work, but the dictionary says oblivion is more related to forgetfulness than lack of awareness.

Should have clarified: I'm looking for a *noun*.

ignorance > this is actually what the word means, not simply "rude" or "crude" which is simply "lack of awareness of proper etiquette"

You are more on target than whatever dictionary you chose. Reading your question on the other page, 'oblivious' was the word that sprang to my mind too. It doesn't mean 'forgetful' as much as it means 'unaware of' in the sense of an unobservant mind, rather than one who once knew but has since forgotten.

Do use 'oblivious' rather than 'oblivion' though. 'Ignorant' would be equally accurate, but it's a more condemnatory word.

You want a noun, eh? Want to impress your teacher? How about 'nescient?'

"ignorance" is perfect for this situation. it means that you don't have any knowledge or education in something. It's has a bit of a negative connotation, but it seems applicable to your sentence. =) hope this helps. and if you don't like 'ignorance'..you should try using the thesaurus and find syn. of the word ignorance.
