Well MOST laptops with built in wifi also have a SWITCH which will disable the adapter and you wont see any wireless networks if the radio is turned off.
Which laptop - make and model! I have used HP, Toshiba, Acer, Compaq, Fujitsu, Gateway, IBM and can tell you
THEY ALL HAVE TO HAVE THE WIRELESS RADIO ENABLED AND TURNED ON to work! It may well just be turned off!!! And you wont get it to work until you "turn it on"!
So check to see that your internal wireless adapter is turned on, How to turn it on all depends on your laptop so check the documentation from the manufacturer! (Some of these use a switch, some use a function key etc.)
From what you say, your internal card is not turned on thus NO NETWORKS are available!
Good Luck

So you have a netgear box then...you definatly dont need the plug in USB port if you have a newish laptop because you should have a button somewhere on your laptop that you press so that your laptop instantly searches for wireless connections that are close by. I believe that this button is the Wifi...not too sure though. If you have that then you shouldnt need a USB device.
The internet should work all over your house no matter where you sit when this option is turned on.
Although sometimes when turned on it doesnt search straight away so you have to double click the internet sign at the bottom right of your screen and ask it to search and connect.
Good luck

I am not sure what you have described here. You can connect to the hub wireless or use a DSN lead initially until you establish connection to the Internet. If your laptop has a Wireless LAN network card, you do not need a separate IEEE 802.11b/g usb Wireless LAN Dongle. If you have used the usb WLAN Dongle that came with the router then it may not be windows compatible and you can only connect to your router by running the software supplied with the wireless router. If you want to use the build-in WLAN, you must uninstall the software needed for the usb WLAN Dongle because this software takes over.

Is your wireless adapter for the laptop built-in or is it something you plug into your usb socket? Also, are you using the term 'USB hub' in the way it is usually used, i.e. a multi-way USB adapter to enable more than one USB device to be used? If your USB 'stick' is your wireless adapter (Netgear WG111??) and not a hub, then you need it to get connected to your wireless router. If, however, it is just a hub, you don't need it for wireless access. The 'router' is never on your laptop (unless you are using a PC as a router). The router is the box connected to the phone socket. You need to set it up with the correct settings: channel no., SSID, encryption (WPA or WEP). Then you set up your laptop to connect to it, using identical settings as you have used for the router, i.e. SSID, channel no., WPA or WEP keys.

If your laptop has WiFi, this is your wireless connection for the internet, the wireless usb adapter is only for desktops that are not wireless enabled.

Un plug it, if your laptop is wireless then you dont need to be connected to the hub. You should know what your network is called. You then have to connect to it and use your security key.

How are you connecting the ADSL modem and the netdgear router jointly. while you're plugging interior the ADSL MOdem to a computer utilising USB and connecting that computer to the Netgear router utilising Ethernet then you relatively might desire to set the computer as much as proportion that's cyber web connection. it may be greater acceptable to purchase a netgear router that's composed of ADSL ethernet and instant and save the sagem as a backup gadget.
