my littlest is 3 and we still let her paint them, this is more fun for a little one than carving (plus much safer). the idea of mr potato pieces is great.

I think it depends on the adult carving the pumpkin with them. If the adult is good with small kids, I think it could be a blast for the kiddies, especially if the adult has a good sense of humor.
I agree with you about drawing or painting a face on the pumpkin. But let the kids attempt to do that. That is a good way to get them involved. Most small kids love coloring and drawing.
Hope it is a good experience. :)

We've carved in past years. Now with a 6 yr old and 3 yr old we've gotten paint. Kids suggested it actually. they had a blast. I went to Family Dollar and got the jar of paints for $1. It's not water color (because it's rainy out here). But does wash off easily with soap and water. Good Luck! Oh I also laid a sheet out for them to paint on in case of accidents. Warning the paint setcomes with one brush but finger painting works too.

NO SHARP OBJECT FOR THEM! as you said painting faces on them is great, stickers or the foam decorations you can glue on. if a little older you can let them use toothpicks and stick things onto the pumpkin like olives for eyes, cherry tomato for nose, or any kind of food or candy will work.
if you just want to let them feel part of the whole process, let them scoop out all the seeds and stuff. great for feeling the texture and sliminess of the guts. just make sure they dont put the seeds in their mouths.
good luck

I saw a really cool idea the other day, a person who had a mentally diabled child used Mr Potato head pieces to make the face instead of cutting one out, safe and creative. You just need a screwdriver to punch holes.

Not a good idea. They are too young to be playing with knives and too much concentration for that age. painting might work, but I would think they would have more fun with stickers or something at that age.

I suggest that drawing the face on with markers would be safer, easier and less mess. You could use wash-off markers and then they could change the faces.
Toddlers that young are too young to be around knives.
