I have tiers of candy. The 1st tier is for the kids in costumes who are oozing Halloween and are sooooo excited. The cutie-bah-tooties get the good stuff. The high schoolers, sans costume, who nearly knock over Dora or Thomas the Tank Engine coming to my door, get the hard candies found only at the bottom of senior citizen's handbags. I just dump the loot in the obnoxious pillow case and send them on their way with a smile. In the past, if they refuse to say , "Trick or Treat", I will require a talent: song, poem, joke, what ever needs to be done to earn MY candy! Happy Halloween

I give candy to all of the kids who come to my house. I sit outside in the front yard, if weather permits, while my husband takes our 7 year old around trick or treating. If you feel strongly about not giving candy to older kids without a costume...that's certainly your perogative. You could also buy "good" candy for the younger kids in costume and buy "junky" candy for the older kids not in costume. Whatever you decide though, you need to be aware of whether you live in an area where you need to worry about reprisals if you choose not to give to the older kids that are not in costume. Hope you have a great Halloween. Remember this is a day that is "all in good fun".

Slam the door in their face. No costume no candy. They could at least get a bed sheet and go as a ghost if they really couldn't afford a costume. If they are to embarrassed to wear a costume they shouldn't be trick or treating in the first place. To the people who are saying not to be stingy...Why shouldn't I be? This younger generation wants something for nothing. My father was telling me a story about how he didn't have money for a costume so he went as the unknown comic with a paper bag over his head. All I ask is that you show a small amount of effort. Also, I'll be darned if I'm going to give in over fear of some 15 year old punk. I have security system with cameras so bring it on!!
P.S. I don't care if your 100 years old as long as you have a costume on you will get candy at my house.

Give them the candy. What's the big deal?
If you want to express your disapproval, just say something like, "You're a little old for this, aren't you?"
If you really want to make an issue of it, tell them you are sorry but they are too old and don't have a costume and you save candy only for kids under age .
But why be so stingy? What's the big deal?

I tease them about it, talk to them like babies. "So little children, what are we being for Halloween today?" and let them answer. I make them say Trick or Treat and beg for candy if they want it. They usually just split. If they go through all the paces, I give them the candy.

its kind of weird when a couple of 16 yr olds go trick-or-treating but if theyre like 14 its still ok-my 14 yr old sister will go trick-or-treating this year.
i think as long as theyre polite you should give them something, because who doesnt miss trick-or-treating when theyre a bit older.

I give them candy...and I give them some gruff. We get a lot of kids through here in this small town and it really doesn't bother me that the older 'beggers' are out there...it is all in good fun.

i think you should give them candy because they might feel dorky in a costume, but still want candy. i mean, wouldnt you if you were like 14 and in a costume?
