A hologram is film capture of the wave fronts of an image, so that if the result is latter illuminated properly, the wave fronts continue and the eye perceives an image that is in 3D. Lasers are used to make a hologram because of their coherent light (wave fronts all coordinated) and depending on how they are made, the result may require a laser for viewing or be visible in ordinary light.
The term is also used for images in which two or more sets of wave fronts are captured in thin slices so that when the media is shifted, the eye sees one image change to the other image.

a hologram is a piece of technology common to many science fiction shows. It is basically a 3 dimensional object in the air made of light. In the shows they are generally able to be projected easily as a means of communication or entertainmen. Simple holograms i believe have been created but none to the complexity of that shown in movies such as Star Wars and Star Trek.

A hologram may be a multilayer film created using lasers. When illuminated by a point source of light (perhaps a small bulb behind your back) photons reach your (two) eyes from two (or more) different layers that when fused by your brain provide an illusion of depth (or 3D). Viewmaster uses a different technique to supply two views of a scene that must be fused to provide 3D. We can perceive depth only because our eyes are a few inches apart and always receive slightly different views of an object at a distance.

Holography (from the Greek, όλος-hòlòs whole + γραφή-grafè write) is the science of producing holograms; it is an advanced form of photography that allows an image to be recorded in three dimensions. The technique of holography can also be used to optically store, retrieve, and process information. It is common to confuse volumetric displays with holograms, particularly in science fiction works such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Red Dwarf, and Quantum Leap.[citation needed]

A hologram is like a 3D photo, taken using two lasers. You'll see them on every credit card these days.
