I want to add some RAM, and want to know how much I've got and how many unused slots I have available. Going to control panel and device manager doesn't help. Maybe I'm looking right at it in device manager, but it doesn't explicitly name the chips that provide RAM.

I have an older Gateway w/ 1.8 GHz Pentium 4.

I welcome any advice.

If you want to know what type and how much RAM you have, then go to Crucial.co.uk. They will harmlessly scan your system and tell you exactly what you have got in your PC (Processor, graphics card, amount of memory & type) and how many spare RAM slots you have. Then they will show you compatible RAM upgrades. I did this and got an extra 1Gb of RAM from them for £35, making one hell of a difference to my PC. Excellent service as well. Hope this helps.

Start > My Computer > View System Information.
It's an old computer but still pretty useful if you've got 512mb or more of RAM so it's worth upgrading.
Make sure you buy the correct type of RAM, if you're not sure what it is then use this site to find out: http://www.crucial.com

regardless of the amount of memory you have you will have to physically open the base unit and find out what TYPE of RAM you have DDR/DDR2/SDRAM/DIMM

please see this link to help you identify what you will need if you do decide to upgrade
