Avg rent 1BR apt - $790 per month
Total utilities (elec, gas, cable) - $250 month (give or take)
Gasoline - around $3 per gallon
Best areas to look for housing - Henderson (southeast) or Summerlin (west).
Food costs vary, overall inexpensive, IMO.
Weather- dry with cool to cold winters, very hot summers.
LA - 5 hour drive on I-15, only a1 hour flight from Vegas offered numerous times a day.
Las Vegas is always on; for the most part you can do the same acitivities at 3am as 3pm. Which is a cool advantage of living here.
If you're from Melbourne or Sydney, I've heard they are expensive cities, so you may find Las Vegas less expensive. Example: people moving to Vegas from LA, San Francisco and New York tend to find cost of living very reasonalbe. My point.. cost of living is relative to where you're coming from.

Here's some more info from another native.
Jobs: You can surely get a job in a casino. You don't have to get a job at a high end casino/hotel. Try the local ones or the ones downtown. You might want to join the culinary union, to help you look for a casino job. Not to be a union member, but to get a job. They have job placement and will send you out for calls on the first or 2nd day. You can quit the union and the job after you get enough experience.
Living: You get what you pay for. If you don't mind people hanging outside and living in a upper lower class area then the rent will be about $650 a month. If you really don't mind and can handle living in a poorer part of town then the rent may be about $500 a month (just give them your best "don't mess with me" Aussie look when you step outside your door. If you can't handle neither of that, then Henderson (not all of Henderson) and summering is your best bet. They can run from $850+.
Community: People in Vegas are generally nice. If they aren't they may be an implant, don't pay any attention to them. They brought their attitude with them. Their are bad parts of town, but that is true about any city.
Living cost: Never noticed. I got to eat and buy things. We do have a lot of $.99 stores and a few wal-marts.
Good luck

Vegas is a great place to live away from the tourist areas. Teachers are always in demand for math and science. Clark County School District is the largest in the nation. Covers Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Blue Diamond, Las Vegas, Jean, Primm, Mt Charleston, Laughlin, Glendale, Mesquite, and Indian Springs.

I live here. When I moved out & was looking for my house to buy, we rented a 4 bedroom, 3 bath for 1300.00$ & in a nice part of town!!! My electric in the summer ran us around 400.00$ a month. Gas is 3.50$ a gallon or so. Car insurance went up, we moved from southern CA. Water around 60.00$ a month. Then cable, phone, gas..... But work is really good out here. Good luck!!!
****** EDIT******** LA is about 4 hours.

The answer above is all true and very good info. I was born here in 1958. I think your biggest challenge is the work permit / immigration laws.

If you like living paycheck to paycheck, then Las Vegas is the place for you!
It is expensive here, especially for entertainment.
It can cost more than $250 a month just to cool down your house in the summer!
I pay $950 for a one bedroom apartment.

you need to live here to get a job.
they will not hire you on a long distance attempt
so retool your plan.... move first and you can get a job in a few days
you need to have a valid id and SS card.
But as a national, you may not qualify

Unless you have hotel/casino experience it could take awhile to get a job. Most of the major casinos want experienced people who get their training from the smaller local casinos. The smaller ones do not pay as well as the major ones. You might reconsider ....
