How about a hermit crab or two? They are relatively easy to care for. Like a lot of animals, initial set-up costs will be the most expensive part (and even that's not bad compared to aquariums and reptile habitats).

As I'm sure you know, maturity is not at an all-time high when a person is 11 years old. :) Whatever animal you end up purchasing for your child, you'll want to make sure that you or a responsible teen/adult in the home is supervising the care of the animal. I've met parents who were *shocked* to discover that their kid had lost interest in a small pet and had neglected it. Well, they're kids. Parents should be involved to teach them pet ownership responsibility.

Good luck on your search and check out the link below if you're interested in hermit crabs.

Well, I have been caring for pythons, Tarantulas, scorpions, and other pets like that since I was 6. I Currently own 15+ Tarantulas, 10 Centipedes, 2 Scorpions, and 1 Whip Scorpion.

I think a Tarantula or a Scorpion would be great for an 11 year old.

A Siberian Chipmunk-

They somewhat resemble North American Chipmunks, but are extremely tame and friendly. Much nicer than other similar sized pets like Sugar Gliders or rodents.

There are tons of breeders online. Aqualandpetsplus.com has a nice article on them. Try to find a breeder close to you.

Their caging requirements aren't huge or super messy, but they can be trained to have fun outside of the cage too, as long as you're around to watch them.

They are quite intelligent, trainable and sociable, and unbelievably cute. If Mom or Dad have to end up taking care of them, it'll be fun for you too.

Any pet can have a high vet bill.

You need to research and find out what you are interested in on your own. What I like for a pet may be something that you just can't tolerate as a pet.

Rabbits are cool but not exotic enough.
How about a hermit crab. They don't need a vet and can live up to 30 some years (not likely though)
They're fun if you get a good active one. You can buy them colorful shells. and you can just pamper them.
They're pretty exotic if you think of it.

If you're worried about vet bills, then rats aren't the pet for you. I've had to pay about 800 € in the last two years, (respiratory infections, two spays, misc. vet trips, and one rat's euthanasia.

Wow, that does limit things..
Rats make great pets, they are very friendly and social animals. Just make sure you have enough time ot take it out and play with it a lot, if not you may want to consider two rats.

Ferrets are pretty cool, especially if you get a young one and it's trained from that age to be around kids. Check with the laws in your area though, ferrets are considered illegal to own in some cities (It's illegal to have one in the city of Detroit).
