Horror movies ... mmmhhh ... let me see. The five I would recommend are:
Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Devil Rides Out, Alien, Halloween & Hell Raiser. They are all different types of movies within the harror genre.

Ok, I don't know all the ins and outs of your assignment but maybe choose 5 from different times and vary them slightly so you can compare? I'd say maybe throw an oldie in there like Psycho, Rear Window, The Exorcist or The Birds. Then maybe one or two from the 80's, so Nightmare On Elm Street or Halloween. Then a couple of more up-to-date ones; Blair Witch Project, The Ring, Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake) or The Grudge. Sounds like a cool assignment! Good luck and happy (?) viewing!

I hope you don't mind me saying that this is a rather silly question, because we don't know what movies you've seen.
As a guide to create an easier comparison, I'd suggest you choose from one old b/w movie; one psychological thriller type; one low budget; one blood and gore; and one which relies heavily on CGI; and one humorous one.
The analysis would then focus on how each film created the sense of horror within the audience, how they related to when they were made (the contemporary themes and trends), and how they used the cinematic technology available.
What you don't need to do is give a detailed plot summary of each film. Make sure you are analytical and not descriptive.
