Well, the events aren't that bizarre (though I won't say they completely aren't) and the setting is in Florida. The name of the book is Artifacts. It's by Mary Anna Evans. It's captivating and I found myself reading far into the night! I just could not put this book down. I definitely suggest it!

Ender's Game ~ Orson Scott Card.
It's the first of eight. I love the whole series. It's Sci-Fi type, but is a very good book.

Well I personally wasn't crazy about the book but it came highly recommended. It's "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy

try jostein gaarder's the orange girl. the setting's not that exotic but it sure is mysterious and grabbing! plus jostein gaarder is into philosophy so you'll be presented another way of looking at the world.
