Quite simply when you want to do anything on the computer you have to start doing it, so if you want to turn it off you have to start turning it off.

You realize of course the start button does not start the computer, or windows opening, it is the start to all programs, including turning the computer off , or restarting it.

Well You shouldn't, what you should do is go to the bottom left of the screen and click on the start box and close the system down properly, otherwise if you are in the middle of something like a game or any other application and you shutdown the PC by pressing the start/power button what will happen is the next time you do start up the computer you could receive a error message saying unexpected shutdown occurred, and some of the files needed to load will not load properly because of this sudden shutdown, only use this method if the computer is not responding to the normal shutdown sequence, you also could damage the PC if you continue to shutdown the PC by pressing the start/power button so be warned, good luck

Labelling!
The switch performs two functions: ON and OFF.

Should it be called the ON switch or the OFF switch?

Since the starting point is that the computer is not powered, the appropriate word was to label it START.

Of course, if the switch had used the standard
symbols, rather than words, the dual use would be clear and non-ambiguous.

well you dont necessarily have to use the start button

you can just pull the plug out of the wall socket, hold the boot up button on the base unit, pull out the power lead at the back.. lots of things you can do if you do not want to always go to the start button :/

Because the button label "Things To Do with this PC" was too long a title, so you START the process of new applications, or START the program that initiates the shutdown process there

YES the shutdown request is a Shortcut to a PROGRAM, it runs itself, closing drivers, and applications before closing down windows and itself.

So START is CORRECT !
