I'm a mental health profession and I work with a psychologist daily. (Check your spelling) The largest misconception clients have about psychologists is that they can solve problems.
This profession doesn't do that. We help the client navigate, evaluate, adjust, and problem solve. But we aren't the action guys. The client is. WIthout the client's willingness to try the recommendations or suggestions of the psychologist and staff, there is no success for the client. We don't take sides and we don't have a magic pill.
That's the largest myth I know of.
Another is that psychologists can read your mind, learn your secrets, or determine your motives. But this has partial truth and partial myth to it. A mental health professional is trained to pay attention to nonverbal cues. THey're trained to sort through the "busy stuff" and identify things that others may not pay close attention to but all people have that ability. Cops and investigators also learn these techniques.

There are many common myths about psychologists:
1) That going to a psychologist will fix all your problems. It cannot and it will not. We can assist you in handling your problems, and we can help you identify problems. We cannot fix all of your problems.
2) Psychologists can read your mind. Though many psychologists can identify behavioral issues, ticks, and underlying problems; we cannot read your mind. We can only look at the behavioral evidence and compare it to a history of behavior.
3) All psychologists want to talk about your mother. Not all psychologists are Freudian. Many psychologists have abandoned Freudian thinking for Cognitive, Cognitive-Behavioral, Biological, and other perspectives. You do not have to sit on a couch and pay $500 an hour for 5 hours while telling me about your mother.
4) Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all the same. They are not. A person with a BA, a person with an MA, and a person with a PsyD will not know the same information. If you ask Reverend Bob BA about your problems, chances are you will not get the same information as you'd get from Dr. Jack PhD.
5) That psychologists can figure out what will happen before it happens without ever meeting with a subject. We cannot and should not tell you that Hollywood starlet A will raise an OCD child. We have to meet with subjects and perform tests and study them -- we cannot watch you on TV and decide your fate.
6) This one is the last and biggest one: that psychologists can solve your problems with a book or a 1 hour TV show. Mental problems of any severity cannot be solved in an hour by talking about it in front of an audience. Mental problems cannot be solved by video montages. It takes some time, work, and effort to solve mental problems.

ok, I think they are brainpickers. My mind is no one eles's business. Some ppl think they are more messed up than their patients. Some ppl think they , um, You know, DO their female patients, and take advantage of them. Some play sick, twisted mind games with them, and clearly they are the ones that need help. That is what I have heard/seen from some psychologists, today. Good luck on your report!
