FYI, Steve Shields did a modern mask of Cheevers when he was playing for the Bruins. The front had the mask and the stitching, while the back had hair and the mask straps. Easily one of the best masks in the NHL.

Gerry Cheevers put stitches on his mask where the puck hit it so it showed where he had to get some if he did'nt have a mask.

Gerry "Cheesy" Cheevers

It started as a joke in practice when he nearly got knocked out by a high shot, the trainer told him he'd need some stitiches and then painted them on his mask. He played well the next start and a silly susperstition/tradition was born.
