i have been asking a few eBay questions lately, i was thinking about jumping on the band wagon and buying/selling something!

so what stops me from not sending something after someone bought it and i collect the money?
or what stops someone from paying after i send it?

Using eBay is just like signing a contract. When you hit the buy button you are legally and morally obligated to pay for an item.
I only buy, never sell but have a friend who sells.
You won't be allowed to use eBay if you buy items and then don't pay for them. They kick you off after the grieveance is filed and settled.
NEVER send anything until you recevie the funds. I've bought all types of stuff and they never send it until they have received the funds.
NOW......I have been ripped off.
I bought a couple of items that the people wouldn't accept PayPal. I shouldn't have as PayPal is your only protection.
Not only did I not get my goods but lost my money.
Only deal with people who use PayPal. PayPal is insurance that you'll either get the goods or your money back.
Don't buy unless you use PayPal.
eBay is great!!!! I wish I could make time to sell some things I have!!!
Good Luck!!!

Clearly paypal (owned by e-bay) is good security but the main way to ensure that you don't get ripped off are the individual ratings. A trader who accepted payment but never sent the goods is going to have terrible negative ratings so no-one would buy from them. Equally a trader will never send goods to someone until s/he has received payment but even so many traders will refuse to deal with someone with low or no ratings.

In a word, PAYPAL. If you don't send, buyer claims via Paypal, no reply from you with proof of postage, they take moneys back.

Other way ? No funds received, don't post goods.

I used PAYPAL only, UNLESS they had agreed personal collection with me in advance. That way I SAW the funds arrive and could insist on Paypal address only for shipping.
