but i checked the timetable and it doesn't seem as if there are any trains available during that time?

There are early trains from Bologna to Milano, like at 5:30 and 5:44 a.m., the next one at 6:44 a.m.
The problem is they don't post the schedule but until the 8th of December now, so you'll have to check back later for their Christmas day schedule. My guess is the trains will run, and you'll be able to find out the exact schedule around mid-December.
