That what doesn't kill us makes us stronger or something like that.
Loved and lost, then you can compare and contrast.

My advice to you is to love as many times as you can. Every time you love someone, you love them in a new way and differently. Every experience is worth all the pain of the loss, if you do happen to lose them, because with each experience you become wiser.
It is without a doubt better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.
There may only ever been one true love of your life, but even losing that is not a bad thing, and as you grow in life and learn to love others you will realize how thankful you were to have had it, even if only having that true love feeling once. Good luck to you and appreciate what love you have had, and again... love as much as you can....

The quote or saying(whatever) has a conditional or limited applicability. From the angle of experience,it's better to have loved and lost. However,if the pain tolerance threshold of a person is low,it would be better that he/she doesn't go through the experience to avoid the possibility of pain through a breakup. Many people spend a good part of lives in struggling to come out of the resultant pain of a love breakup. All the same, the choice is difficult as one is in unknown territory.

It is better to have love because for awhile it was wonderful. If you never love you never put yourself out there, yes. But ,even though it may end for whatever reason. There were memories made,a deep connection with someone else!Sharing their lives, dreams, hopes, fighting the world together.
I think we know when it's over, and that's what also makes the pain almost unbearable.

'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
Alfred Lord Tennyson, In Memoriam, 1850, line 27, stanza 4.
Very wise man that Tennyson was as well as a brilliant poet.
Us humans are all sado-masochists when it comes to love if you think about it, though some will deny this of course because of their beliefs.

I've never had pain after a break-up ... well .. one but he was more like a very close friend. The only intimate relationship I've had ... I was over him within hours of the breakup. No pain, not a second thought. I mustn't have really loved him.

During high school, I was very close to a young woman. Thirty-five years later, I still think of her fondly....and still miss her, so I would say yes.
ON THE OTHER HAND.....
Almost two years ago I got separated from a woman I had been married to for 24 years. I would have been better off waxing my carrot for that period of time. So I also say no.

Sure it's better to live a full life and experience all its emotions that to live your life wrapped in cotton wool and as such never really live.
With love comes grief and with life comes death.
Sad. But all part of living.

Oh, for Pete's sake!! Think about it. How would you like to go through life without ANYONE ever loving you? Parents, relatives, friends? There are people who do experience this, and they wouldn't hesitate to answer this question. Now, HOW do you think they would answer this question??
