wow, interesting question. I think that all music is music. I listen to anything from R&B to heavy metal but THATS what makes us unique. Some people may relate to a certain type of music better than others. I tend to listen to R&B on the go, like when I don't pay attention to the words and just want a cool beat. I tend to listen to rock when i'm pissed. and then everything else just falls somewhere in between. Another great explanation for choice of music is parents and the environment you were brought up as a child. If you loved rap as a kid, you will probably love it as an adult. If your parents listen to a lot of rock, you will probably get into it as well. I just think that most people these days have enough with drama and listening to the "words" in a song and just want a cool beat so thats why they choose R&B.

That is such a huge contradiction!
As much people listen to R&B as rock and metal, and there are probably A LOT of people who like the exact same bands here too! - How is that more unique?!

Listening to rock and metal does not make you unique. It is listened to by millions and millions of people just like R&B.

It depends on the personality of the person. The music he/she listens to is defined by which genre or mood he/she can relate to. Not all people are into being unique and loud. Some just like to go with the flow and chill.

I love it! But in the whole world there are lots of people who like the same genre you do. Just maybe your friends and the people just around you don't listen to it and you think your so different. Well ya there you are, but there are all genres of music so all of us are unique.

I'm afraid that listening to rock and metal does NOT make us unique, much as we'd like to think it does - and that from a seasoned rock chick. Although it is also beyond me why people like so called R&B, especially when there's no blues in it at all, and the rhythm part is pretty sparse also!

here's the thing, i was listening to r&b long before i started listening to rock, because i 'thought' i could not stand the (rock) genre entirely... also, i was practically conceived, and raised off of r&b music... and to this day, i still consider myself intelligent, so James M. wherever you came up with that conclusion, shove it up your ***... i don't listen to any kind of music just because someone else is listening to it... every piece of music i spent my money and time on, (and it went on to very different genres... as well as different countries, later on) was all due to my own preferences.... also not to be entirely rude, but the way you have brought out your statement was very hypocritical of you. in part, i do agree with everyone else, in a sense, "to each each, it's own" it's what makes us (as humans) unique...but i will mention this... by the time you're about 40 or 50 and have a significant other (man or woman, i dont know your tastes, and it is 2007)... some classic motown music will be the first thing you start looking for... because how cool would it look for a 50-60 y/o to be in a mosh pit???????

everyone likes what they like...if one didnt like rock, then they wouldn't be unique??? that is ridiculous. i hate r&b music but i dont think i or anyone else who listens to rock/metal is more unique than people who listen to r&b.

James M, please tell us who conducted this so called research?
UNIQUE? you're so narrowminded, so wrong... can you not respect everyones taste in music? it does not make you unique... you just think you're different, but lets face it, you're not, you're just the same old wannabe, like everyone else who tries to disrespect other forms of music..
I myself love all sorts of music, and hate people such as yourself who are ignorant beyond belief, and cannot accept other peoples taste in music.... it's your kind that are holding society back... YOUMAKE ME SICK.
Good day.
EDIT!!!!
Marky g... why would people say they like RnB just cos everybody else does? That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard since James M commented.. You're so ignorant.... In fact, I found a lot of young kids today claiming they sooo 'in the know' with rock music etc, and complaining bout other forms of music... you're not a true music lover if you keep criticising other forms.. it's all artistic..
and to the person who was banging on about political issues and other issues in songs, maybe people want to relax with music, and don't want to hear about current events... I like some political songs, however, I also like songs where I don't have to think it through, and dig in deep.. Different music fits different moods... why are you so ignorant? you're clearly not half as intelligent as you claim to be, otherwise you wouldn't be so narrowminded... Grow a brain mate.

millions of people listen to rock and metal, so how does that make you unique??? hmmm...
this is kinda a daft question - kinda like asking why people like chocolate ice cream instead of strawberry. They just do, people have different tastes, thats what makes the world more interesting.
In any case If everybody liked rock, you'd be even LESS unique than you are now! lolol
