It's a car that doesn't look fast, but is. Something that if you were to race it, people would be laughing at you until you leave them in your dust.

For a car to legitimately be a sleeper, it should be some model that is not usually fast or not usually thought of as fast. If it is modified, any cosmetic modifications should me moderate. Things which suggest speed (hood scoops, obvious brake upgrades, visible carbon fiber, stuff like that) should be kept to a minimum, and there should be no "rice."

Whether it should SOUND mild is debatable.

Some factory "sleepers" include:

Ford Taurus SHO
Mitsubishi Galant VR-4
Mazda MX-3 V6
Many early muscle cars (like early-mid 60s, before things really got going)...these aren't really sleepers anymore unless they're rust-buckets, since perceptions have changed.
Ford Lightning
GMC Typhoon
Many high-end Audi models
Subaru Forester XT
Subaru Legacy GT (these two have hood scoops, but otherwise don't look as fast as they are...particularly the Forester)
Mazdaspeed 6
Mercedes Benz R-63 AMG
Ford Contour SVT
Ford Focus SVT
Chrysler 300C SRT-8, if seen by someone who doesn't know about the SRT-8

But most sleepers are cars that people have modified...stealthily. Probably the ultimate I've heard of is a guy who crammed a VW VR-6 into a 1st generation Rabbit.

a sleeper would be a 1973 amc gremlin with a 1983 datsun 280 z turbo motor and transmission installed in it [still has stock 6 cyl sound from the exhaust] but watch the jaws drop when you crack open the throttle
this was a super car at the stoplight drags [unbeatable]

A vehicle that looks normal without any modifications but its one of those that turn heads and open eyes when you drop the hammer. It has a whole lot of tire burning horsepower under the hood.

Sleeper is a car with internal modification (e.g. engine suspension) but without external modification (e.g. bodykits, flashy alloys)

A polar opposite of a rice burner/boy racer's car who has all the parts to make it look like a go-fast car for superficial purposes but no other modifications
