Well this is just my opinion, but I think that if the person really is your best friend then it's impossible for them to be your lover because that would just be plain weird. Your friend should be your friend purely for that reason. You shouldn't fancy them or see them in any way but your friend. It would be like fancying your sibling.
This is my opinion because my best friend is a guy and I've known him my whole life. We have never fancied each other or gone down that road at all. Not even come close. And that is because we are best friends and nothing else. I can't even imagine fancying him, let alone sleeping with him! And I know he feels the same. Basically, what I'm saying is that if you fancy someone or love someone (as in love love, not family or friend love) then they are not meant to be your best friend...at least not in the purely friends sense. I don't know if anything I'm saying here is making sense but it all makes perfect sense to me.
That is my opinion. I would love to hear other people's.

Yes and No.
If it's a mutual agreement that there is not going to be any strings attached and no hard feelings if one of you does stuff with another person. Also if you two can maintain the friendship that you had in the beginning and you don't let this issue come in between you two.
.It can be a bad thing or a good thing, depending on the 2 people involved and how emotionally stable or unstable they are.

No!
There is always that lingering question in the back of the mind that says "what if it doesn't go as planned? I will have lost a lover and a friend, all for physical contact."

It depends. In the case of my wife and I, best friends can become lovers and get married and be happy and have fun for 15 years and counting. In the case of me and my miniature wiener dog, I don't think so... no.

Why not? Anything is possible. My husband is my best friend and my lover. It really depends on the maturity of the two people. Good luck!

Yes, but it can get messy, you may end up doing something with the other person's best interest in mind, and just hurt yourself while destroying your friendship all at the same time.

If they are going to get married, yes. If they just want to be friends with benefits, No. It changes the chemistry especially if it doesn't work out. You can't really go back to being best friends again if it doesn't work out.
