There are two ways:
Play good offense: Make yourself valuable to others and usually you'll have to start a business offering that value.
Play good defense: Live beneath your means, save & invest the difference. Don't worry about status material possesions.

You can come up with a brilliant money-making notion, but without influencial support, it may go nowhere.
Make good contacts is the answer.
Sounds a bit nepotistic, but be assured it works.
