A female voice pitched between soprano and alto is called a.........?

(from a harmony past paper)
any ideas? I used to know this...

actually I've remembered the answer, thanks anyway Judy J! you're right about the soprano 1 etc. but the more accurate answer would be mezzo-soprano. Thanks anyway!

A mezzo-soprano is between soprano and (contr)alto, although no such voicing exists in choir scores. However, the closest thing would be the 2nd soprano, if there were one.

Well, there are really no other things that I am aware of between sopranoes, altos, tenors, and bases. I am pretty sure that we start to number off the different parts in each section. For example, the highest sops would be soprano 1. lower, but not as low as alto, soprano would be soprano 2... etc.
