Hey, I am going for a major upgrade. First of all here are my computers specifications:

- Intel Pentium 4, 3.2gHZ
- 250gb IDE Hard drive
- 1.5gb DDR Ram
- 128mb ATI Radion Graphics Card
(Compaq Presario: SR1278AN
Chipset: Intel 915P)

I am getting into video editing and need a more powerful computer. I am going to have to save a bit of $$. I am getting a new 22" lcd monitor for sure.

First of all I need a Core 2 Duo, I know this will help in video editing and the rendering time. But my motherboard doesn't take core 2 duo so i need to get a new one. I want DDR2 RAM too so i will need a cheap but not slow motherboard which takes ddr2 as well. Also can DDR ram go in DDR2 ram slots?

I have an IDE hdd and want to get a SATA 500gb but can i transfer ALL the files from my IDE to my new one including windows xp itself, i ave True Image. My computer can connect the IDE and the SATA hard drives.

I need a better graphics card too, can you please recommend where/what to get? And i live in aus

First of all, lets remember that video editing need lots of ram and powerful CPU, but not graphic card

All C2D system comes with DDR2 rams. No motherboard supports DDR ram anymore. No worries there. And no, you cannot slot it a DDR ram into a DDR2 slot, it won't even fit it.

Core 2 Duo, E6550 (2.33GHz) and E6750 (2.66GHz) are very good performer, and priced reasonably cheap as well. The 2.66GHz is only slightly more expensive then its 2.33GHz part, get that if you can.

This CPU runs at 1333MHz FSB (older C2D runs at 1066FSB). So you would want a motherboard that supports 1333FSB. I recommends you Intel motherboard, DG33FB. This board is not the best performer, but it's a rock solid board with good stability (as far as my experience with it goes) and good price for average budget user.

If you're not into heavy gaming, nVidia GeForce 8600GT is a resonable graphic card. Its cheap, and pack a punch for older games (I can run FEAR on maxiumum setting with this graphic card). If you're really into the latest 3D gaming, you may want a GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB version. Of course they comes with a price.

If budget is not a problem, heck you could just get a quad core and 8800 Ultra graphic card lol.

You can transfere files between two hard disk no problem at all. just cut and paste.

But software and windows XP cannot. It won't work that way. You need to reinstall them on the new coputer. Just transfer your files and folders, don't waste time transfering any installed programs and windows XP, they are not going to run at your new PC

What is your current power supply?
A C2D system with mid range graphic card (8600GT or GTS, or ATi HD2600 series) needs a real good, true power 450W at least.

If you're getting some real powerful graphic card, get a better PSU, 550W or so, again, get one that is true power by respectable brands such as Enermax
