Two wheel drive means that the vehicle is propelled forward (under engine power) with only the two rear wheels. 4 wheel drive means that the vehicle CAN be propelled by all 4 wheels. This can be accopmlished by the shifting of a lever or the pushing of a button on the dashboard.
The "difference" is that 4 wheel drive will permit being able to drive in "off road" conditions. This is quite handy fro muddy roads, rough terrain, and other difficult road conditions. It is NOT a license to get out on the road and act like a fool. Ice conditions are no more favorable to a driver in a 4 wheeler then a knowledgeable driver in a 2 wheeler. It just means when you screw up in a 4 wheeler you will look more foolish.

In two wheel drive, the power from gearbox is connected to two wheels(generally rear wheels through an axle) and in four wheel drive,an extra lever can connect power to the other two wheels for a greater traction power as and when required, like while going uphill or on a muddy track/road.For plain roads and city driving a 2 wheel drive is good enough but for a cross country drive,a 4 wheel drive is very helpful.Fuel consumption is obviously higher while driving in a 4 wheel configuration.

Normally, 2 wheel drive only controls either the two back or front wheels (mainly the front), and 4 wheel drive controls all 4 of the wheels on a car (also called "all wheel drive")

A 2 wheel drive car/truck uses one rear wheel to move the vehicle. If it has a locker it will use both. A 4 wheel drive has an extra transmission that is controlled by you, the driver to turn on or off in a hi gear or lo gear mainly used for off roading. If it is a front wheel drive car both front wheels pull the car in motion. If it is an all wheel drive, like subaru wrx all the wheels propel the car. 4wheel or all wheel drives are mainly used for traction purposes like racing, mountain roads, dirt, sand, snow etc. The majority of the cars or trucks on the road are 2 wheel drive.

A two wheel drive is a car that only rotates the two front wheels to move it. A four wheel drive is the same however it also has a function where it can drive rotating all four. However the four wheel drive function is only really for cross country driving so i wouldn't get worried.

2 wheel drive means 2 wheels (front wheels) turn right and left at the same time.
4 wheel drive means all 4 (front and rear) can turn right and left at the same time.
