I guess it is relative to age, but I would call old movies pictures made up to about 1950s/60s rather than the 1980s/1990s say. Caveman is right about it I think. Movies like James Stewart movies (Harvey, It's A Wonderful Life, Mr Smith Goes to Washington etc) as well as other classics really could not be better than they are if they were made today with all the special effects we have today. There are good actors and pictures with good stories today too - any decade would have good films as well as not so memorable films. My favourite film, It's A Wonderful Life (1946) was not a great success when it came out, but is a classic now. Guess it depends what people think is good. For 1980s vs now, I have more favourites from then than 2000s (but that might be because I had more time to see movies then too, or just liked the stories better). Maybe something like Lord of the Rings would not have been as good in the 1980s or earlier as it is now, if the same special effects had not been available, I don't know. Good luck.

Well, I'm 35, and old movies to me are from the 1920s and 30s. I really like The Philadelphia Story, and there is no way on this earth it could be remade better.
If they're remaking movies from the 80s, they're fools. The 80s was a cesspool of deep, deep wrongness, and should be left to rot where it died.

To many movie are usin CGI it kinda gets tired after awhile... beowilf is supposed to be 40% CGI.
Older movie like Harvey 1940's? and The Quiet Man (1947) relyed on Acting not special effects..
Buster Keaton & Charlie Chapman relyed on acrobatics and pratfalls get a scene accross...
