A home run in baseball can be scored by barely getting the ball beyond the reach of an outfielder at the boundary wall or by hitting it well up into the stands or, rarely in modern parks, hitting it over the edge of the park into the streets outside. Thus hitting it out of the park is going beyond the call of duty, making an extra effort which has been folded back to the kinds of answers given before mine - not just a success, but a notable triumphant success.

It can be applied to anything where an outstanding achievement happens. A person's test scores can be 'hit out of the park' - a perfect new recipe, winning a card game, reaching a weight loss goal - see? Anything outstanding like that - can be "hit out of the park" - An awesome accomplishment, etc.

In baseball, you get a home run and score when you hit the ball beyond the borders of the field, or out of the park. It is a big deal to hit a home run.
When you make a great accomplishment, usually taking a task to the end quickly, someone will tell you that you hit it out of the park.

Derived originally from Baseball ---Ball parks even in the
"sticks " usually have Enclosures of some sort---in my home town there was a wooden fence (with "knots' in the planks---
push these knots out and you have "knot holes" ---we kids
would watch the ball game through these---then the owners
formed "knot hole gangs" which we joined ---we could then get into the ball park for 25cents !
Anyhoo--hitting a ball out of the "Park" was the most
exciting thing to see ! It still is !
In business when you come up with a bright idea that
makes your Company even more profitable---even a
Slogan like "Double Mint meams Double Fun"!!!!
Wow ! You just hit the ball out of the Park !!

It originally meant to hit a homerun in baseball, but today it is a very popular term used to describe anything that was above average, done extremely well, surpassed expectations, etc.
Example:
Tim's science fair project was really well done and creative. He really hit it out of the park!

And an example would be that you are trying to sell a company on your idea so you give them a presentation. After the presentation they not only bought your idea (a home run) but they gave you a 10 year contract for a million a year. (you hit it right out of the park)
