At the break-up of the Ottoman Empire in1920 the Kurds were promised there own territory under The Treaty of Sevres. The treaty was rejected in the end. Under the new Treaty of Lausanne, Turkey was recognized as an independent nation. They didn't have to grant the Kurds autonomy. the Kurds have been fighting for their independance ever since.

The Kurd's have been fighting to get a "Homeland"- for a VERY long time; & I THINK some of them believe that if they can draw the U.S Occupiers of Iraq into the "fray"- that they'll gain some "leverage" with Turkey- & get what they want. Problem IS, that's ONE "conflict" the U.S. does NOT want to get involved in... -So the Kurd's are probably out of luck...- as usual.
