Why are women fine with walking around in a bikini top at a beach but yet they shy away from strangers when caught in their bra?

When wearing a bikini, they have prepared themselves for the fact that everyone will be looking at them. When wearing just a bra, they think they are alone, and don't like being walked in on when vulnerable.

When you are in your bra you feel more exposed because it is not considered a particle of clothing, it is an undergarment. A bikini however is a swim suit. People are seen in swim suits everyday. If someone is wearing a bikini they know people are going to look at them half bare, but with a bra it is more of a shock

Interesting question! I have thought about this before as well. I think it has to do with context and expectation. If a woman is wearing a bikini top, she is consciously putting a lot of bare skin on display, like on a beach. She knows that people will see her this way and is prepared for it. Now, the same woman is getting changed in a dressing room, and is wearing her bra. She thinks she is in a private place and has no expectations that anyone will see her. Therefore, if someone accidently barges in, her reaction is to cover up and be embarrassed.
It's a thought anyway!

From what I see, they should be embarrassed by the bikinis. I always assume that a hunk of male or a squad of females increases the security of those fitted out in skimpy stuff for the beach. But it probably just expectations. I note that Americans think showing bra straps and other lingerie parts is shocking, by Latin American ladies styles often show considerable edges of lacy underware stuff below skirts, above cleavage and around scoop necklines.

bikini tops are generally lined on the inside and made from spandex/neoprene/etc... bras have more support, adjustable stuff, etc....different materials, different engineering.

Bras are traditionally considered to be "underwear" so we feel uncomfortable running around in that!
