Anybody remember goalie Grant Fuhr??- only won 5 Stanley Cups. Currently there is Ray Emery, Kevin Weeks, Mike Grier, Donald Brashear, Anthony Stewart, Georges Laraque, Jarome Iglina. Probably missed a few. As long as that person can play the game, who cares what ethnicity or skin tone he is?

Edit: Willie O'Ree was the first black hockey player in the NHL. He played for the Boston Bruins on January 18, 1958 against the Canadiens.

I believe that the color barrier is broken - and I applaud that. In my opinion, the only reason that there aren't more African-Americans in hockey is the lack of affordable hockey arenas or hockey equipment in predominantly African-American neighborhoods - where the other sports can be more easily and cheaply provided, if only in a modified format. In other words; hockey can be expensive, but anything can be a baseball "diamond" or football field.

I welcome anyone to the game who brings a passion to play and a determination to play well. The race card is always going to exist until every freaking one of us is the same. Some people will do it from ignorance and some from jealousy and some will do it to get you off your game. If you let them get to you, you've lost the battle and you will be miserable for it. Take some inspiration from those who blazed the trail before you. Find a role model in people like Iginla, Cheechoo and Park and emulate what they bring to the game; guts, grit, determination and a sense of dignity that allows them to rise above the petty stupidity around them to shine all that more brightly.
And hey, keep your stick on the ice.

What do you consider a minority? Finns, Swedes, Russians, Latvians, Canadians, Czechs, Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, a few Asians.. Paul Kariya and his brother.and African Americans all play hockey. It doesn't really matter what you are. We're all human. I like hockey.

I've never really given it much thought before, but I think it's a good thing. As long as you can play the game I don't care what minority you are.

What minorities? I don't think I've seen more than 1 or 2, but then again I don't watch hockey.

The only color that matters to me is the color of the goal light.
