The remaining branches look like twigs sitting on the yard (next to the house) except the branches remain rooted in the ground. Any suggestions on how to handle this?

They will regrow.they must be pulled to eliminate them.

It's probably dead.

A large ivy plant is the same as a shrub or tree. If you chop it off at ground level you usually kill it. However, ivies produce many runners which root themselves incredibly easily.

Do you want the ivy back? Just wait.

Do you want to get rid of it? You've got to get down to the roots below ground. Cut, pull, cut, pull.

They have to be dug up before the next growing season or, they'll start growing again.

add more soil. they will grow back
