Very good question. I do not know exactly why, but even some man made things need a supply of energy. I guess this question would go hand and hand with life itself. If you look at humans, we have so many components that require energy.

Another good question would be is it possible for living things to exist for a long time without a continuous supply of energy?

A continuous supply of energy is needed to prevent degradation of living bodies. Once our mitochondria stop manufacturing energy we are dead. Simply to maintain our chemical molecules gathering to each others to form the physical body this process needs continuous energy supply. Meaning if you are doing nothing you need energy.

You know, living things can be compared to fast sport cars and the track is our world and their mission is to live (in case of the world) or survive (in case of the race) . So, they need continuous supply of energy (i.e continuous fuel recharge in the sport car)

I hope my answer would be a correct explanation!

Life requires energy. Without it, respiration, digestion, growth, response, movement, reproduction, etc. would not be possible. By definition, a living being must do these things.
