Germany....and the military sent me back. It was 1979, and I got shipped into the base on Thanksgiving day. My wife and I were new to the area, (duh) and well, frankly they didn't celebrate Thanksgiving in the town outside the base. They roll those streets up. So I took my wife to the chow hall hoping to get dinner, then to the stores, (they were all closed), then I finally found a place that was open. So for Thanksgiving day of 1979, I had a can of potted meat food product, some mayo and hotdog buns. That and some orane juice. Three years later they let us come back to the US, but they sent me to F.E. Warren in Cheyenne Wyoming, which a whole other story.

I was stranded when my car broke down in the desert on the way to Vegas. It was 116 degrees out that day. Luckily we just happened to be near an exit to a gas station basically in the middle of nowhere, nearest town 40 miles away. We walked to the gas station then had to wait for a tow truck to take us to Baker. After that, we had to wait for a Greyhound bus to take us to Vegas. After our time in Vegas, took the bus back to the repair shop that ripped us off, of course, then drove home.

I was stranded downtown. A public bus driver asked us if we had a way to get home at about 1 in the morning and he took us all the way back to our side of town. Hehe! What a nice guy.

I was stranded in the airport in Rome trying to get to Croatia. I didn't know if they had a ticket for me or not because this goofy Croatian guy had set it up but I had a hard time reaching him. The ticket was there though but they had a hard time finding it.

On the way back I had to spend the night in that same airport getting back to the US.

Ho Chi Min City, then called Saigon. I snuck off the Army post to spend the night with a young lady. In the morning guys came and pounded on the door. They said I had to go with them or I would be in trouble. The young lady said not to. We waited until they went away then I snuck back on post hiding on the floor of a cab. I could have been killed or wound up as a roommate of John McCain. Whew!

Stationed in Norfolk Va, I went on a road trip with a friend to Tampa. The engine seized and the car was totaled just inside the Fl. state line. We had to walk house to house at 2:30 in the morning trying to get someone to let us use a phone (this was before cell phones were affordable). FINALLY, around the seventh house, a kind soul allowed us to use hers to call my friend's wife. She had to drive several hours to pick us up, and loan us enough money to take the train back to Norfolk.

I was 6,000 miles from home and wondering Berlin, Germany on foot...it was the most fun- and interesting three hours of my life! Yes, I was lost and had to ask for directions three or four times.

Germany is a beautiful and wonderful country and I can't wait to go back!
