The "Mother of all Tax Reforms", Rangel's new bill is taking center stage in the tax reform debate. However, he refused to talk about the Bush Tax Cuts, set to expire in 2010.

One of the famous tax reforms by Bush was the "Military Family Tax Relief Act" of 2003.

Do you think democrats will encourage the Ways and Means chairman to keep this one or will the democrats say, "screw the military", make 'em pay?

Okay, guys, you asked for it. The MTRA of 2003 provided relief for military families who are forced to move every few years to new assignments. Every time they move, they have to pay a capital gain when they sell their house because they are disqualified by the 5-year rule of ownership.

Now, because of our "Veteran" Charles Rangle, every time active duty service members move to a new assignment, they will be penalized by having to pay a capital gain of (not 15% or 5%) but the substantially new rate when BOTH of these provisions expire.

Way to go, Charley! From one veteran to another, thank you SO much! You really know how to kick us in the a ss when we need it the most!

Noah, I do corporate taxes for a living (look at my profile). The revenue code is not too complicated for me.

Charlie Rangel is a combat veteran of the Korean War. His proposal to get a 4% surcharge put on incomes above $160,000 a year doesn't have much support on either side of the aisle and he has already admitted that fact.
He also wrote a bill to re-instate the draft. Not so much based on manpower needs, but because of the high unemployment rate among males 18-26 years of age in his district. And he represents one of the districts in the House with a truly weird history about it. Rangel succeeded Adam Clayton Powell. He was the first Member of Congress to be expelled from that body in many years. Powell had been the successor to Vito Marcantonio who came to that seat after World War Two. Marcantonio was a communist and made no bones about it.
In short, Charlie Rangel's district is in the "Twilight Zone" of American politics. And he is the perfect one to represent it.

Tax bills are way too complicated to actually make judgements based on what you hear filtered through what you know or have been lead to believe. Taxes have to be appropriate to the situation and just 'lowering taxes' isn't much of an answer if you make up the difference with borrowed dollars. The progressive income tax takes into consideration the fact that the 'rich' actually do have more money so they can afford to pay a little more. Unfair? True, but life isn't fair. The rich pay a little more to live in a first world country where established social and physical infastructure makes it possible to BE rich and that infrastructure has to be paid for. Also, nobody pays the top percent from first dollar. The First $15,000 is taxed at 10%. It goes up in five stages to a maximum of 24%. But wait! There's more! By taking advantage of certain deductions and tax breaks the bite isn't as large as you might believe....for instance. Wages are taxed at the ordinary rate, but capitial gains are taxed a a much lower rate. The truly 'rich' don't make most of their money in wages, but rather their income stream is based on investments. If you invest in municipal bonds or state issued bonds you pay zero tax on the income....shazam..wouldn't you like a deal like that? In the end, no rich guy ever went belly up paying taxes...as a rule they have a darn good deal. As far as Rangel 'hating' the military that's nonsense..Rangle is a much decorated combat verteran of the Korean War. His gripe, and mine as well, is that our military is way too bloated, way too large and way too poorly managed and used. If we we're going to re-fight WW2 it might come in handy, but wars now are irregular affairs where 70 ton tanks and billion dollar aircraft are more money makers for the defense industry than a need for the defense of the US. Basically your post is just another ditto-head attack on all things that aren't supportive of the Bush Junta and its war against common sense and what's really good for the american wage-earner!

it is previous. Rep. Rangel proposed this a year - perchance longer - in the past. He knew on the time it would not make it out of committee. He change into attempting to make a level about how youngsters with wealthy daddies are not status in line to enlist and die in a conflict for oil. He says the President ought to imagine harder about going to conflict if there is an equivalent danger his daughters will be despatched over. This bill has no danger of passing any time quickly. balloting for it should be political suicide.

No, and the tax reform will cut taxes to over 91 million families, and for most people making under 500 thousand a year.

Sounds like the mother of all tax breaks to me.
The tax breaks for those that make millions a year are not in danger yet, so you are probably OK for now.

Man, I just don't get Rangel. He was the only member of Congress that told Yugo Chavez to take a hike last year when Yugo wanted to tour Harlem; and Charlie also slugged it out with the North Koreans and Chinese during that conflict.

Rangel just doesn't know anything about the US Military.

He bought into the Vietnam myth, that minorities make up the bulk of US combat forces.

That's why he submitted his draft bill.

Until someone took him aside and informed him, that most of the US combat troops, are white middle class males.

Who serve at a disproportionate number in combat units, to their presence in the US general population.
