You crack me up. That's about the LAST thing I'd do, but maybe I should rethink it. Good philosophy - like who doesn't fart? I was going to say that sometimes a comfortable silence is better than forced conversation. I'd hate to risk it on a bodily function that may in all likelihood clear the restaurant.

It depends on the crowd doesn't it? Your method may work well in a bar (and I am going to try that), but I would shy away from trying it at a wedding. It boils down to finding a common thread between yourself and the others at the situation.

My favorite is lines in the grocerry stores... you wait forever and no one is saying anything they just keep staring.. I normally ask them about something in their cart... So.. you on your period? Or So you going to get drunk tonight? I get a laugh.. as long as it isn't an old lady...
