to make sure they get the facts right. things we hear on the playground are not always 100% accurate.

I was actualy kind of relieved when my mum gave me "the talk" last year. Kids get a lot of misinfomation at school. One of my friends freaked out when she got her period and thought she was dying cause she didn't know what it was. Theres always rumours going around when your young. Stupid thinks like "you can get pregnant by touching a boy. (that was pretty amusing the whole class split into sides the girls and boys sat at the opposite end of the class and wouldn't go near eachother for a week, typical 8 year old behaviour) Do we really wont kids hearing this stuff on the street. They dont always get the right infomation. This is the sort of thing that gets 13 year olds pregnant because they didn't know to use a condom(and not to have sex at 13). Sex ed at school is ridiculous you dont get any useful infomation from it.

Because at 12 a child (and yes I say child!) may not understand everything about sex, and protection and what comes with it? Because a 12 year old may have questions that are being -incorrectly- answered by someone else?
You think the parent isn't uncomfortable with this conversation? You don't think it's very embarrassing to come up to your child and ask what they know about sex and talk to them about it? However this is a parent's JOB. Not some other kid, not some other adult, parents should be the ones to talk to their kids about sex. Because a child might be uncomfortable isn't an excuse not to have a talk about it.
My mom had the talk with me, uncomfortable? Sure. But I'll have it with my children when the time comes, it's part of being a parent.

I only have a 3 year old so this talk is way off.
However, I will have the talk because I have been 12 and have been an adult and KNOW the difference, unlike many teenagers who think they know everything. What you may know at 12 could just touch the surface of all their is to know and what if something you think you know is incorrect??
I will ensure I have this talk because I love my daughter and want to ensure that she is well informed to make appropriate choices.
Also, not all children are rude. Some appreciate their parents and "do want to hear it from them". I had no problem when my mother gave me advice when I was a teenager because I had something called RESPECT!

The truth is that there are plenty of kids who really don't know anything, or they think they know and they really don't. Parents have a responsibility to make sure their kids are informed.
We never had a big talk with our son (who is 13). We talked to him little by little all of his life and let him know that if he ever has questions he can come to us. The beauty of it is that it worked! He comes to us when he needs clarification on something, and we leave him alone unless he asks.

To fill in the blanks, to give a certain amount of perspective on the WHY as well as the HOW.
And because I've known 12 year olds who thought they wouldn't get pregnant their first time, or thought condoms could be turned inside out and used again.

I guess it's because they don't want their kids to be ignorant and go out and make stupid mistakes.
